The concept of Invisible beauty has been on my mind over the last month or so after seeing Immaterials (the first clip featured) I’ve come across a few other similar projects since, and have shared my favorites below.
Immaterials – the ghost in the field:
This video is about exploring the spatial qualities of RFID, visualised through an RFID probe, long exposure photography and animation. It features Timo Arnall of the Touch project and Jack Schulze of BERG. More info here at nearfield.org and here at BERG London
Magnetic Movie:
The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries . All action takes place around NASA’s Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries . Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields as they delve into our inaudible surroundings, revealing recurrent ‘whistlers’ produced by fleeting electrons . Are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world? More info here at semi conductor films
Roomba Art:
Ever wonder what path your Roomba takes as it clears the floor? Well, here’s an easy way to find out, and create some fine artwork in the process. The above pictures were made by sticking an LED to the top of a Roomba vacuum, then photographing it using a long exposure setting. This results in a form of motion capture, and you can clearly see where your Roomba has been by where the light trails are. There are a bunch of other photos at the Flickr group. Found at MAKE
Making an RFID cross-section:
This pen is designed to map and visualise the invisible radio fields around RFID tags. The pen only draws when it detects the an RFID signal from a reader below the paper. It was made in 2006 by Schulze & Webb and Timo Arnall. This version is modified by Einar Sneve Martinussen.
